Lanija Antionne Gilpatrick, a 22-year-old African American male, tragically passed away on July 26, 2013, in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Initially, his death was reported as an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound. However, the case took a significant turn when an anonymous Facebook message sent to Gilpatrick's mother in 2015 claimed that he did not shoot himself, but was shot by Tyler Prudden, a fellow Marine.
The message prompted authorities to reopen the investigation.
Tyler Prudden, who was 30 years old at the time of his sentencing, initially claimed that Lanija Gilpatrick had accidentally shot himself. However, Prudden later admitted to pointing a gun he believed to be unloaded at Gilpatrick and pulling the trigger, resulting in a fatal gunshot wound to Gilpatrick's eye. Prudden was subsequently arrested on July 19, 2016, and pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter on September 20, 2019.
During the investigation, it was revealed that Prudden had a history of reckless behavior with firearms. He had previously dry-fired a weapon at another Marine friend. Prudden's ex-wife, Lori Green Prudden, played a crucial role in the case's reopening. She informed Prudden that the police knew he was responsible for Gilpatrick's death, leading to his eventual confession.
