On May 5, 2024, 61-year-old Michael Seymour was fatally shot while seated in his minivan near the intersection of 12th Street and Lake Merritt Boulevard in Oakland, California. After being struck by gunfire, Seymour managed to drive approximately half a mile to the 1200 block of First Avenue, where he was involved in a collision. Emergency responders pronounced him deceased at the scene.
The Oakland Police Department swiftly initiated an investigation, collecting critical evidence from the crime scene. Within 30 hours, they identified 43-year-old Justin Jenkins as the primary suspect. Jenkins was apprehended on May 6, 2024, in the 1200 block of Broadway, found in possession of a loaded firearm at the time of his arrest.
The Alameda County District Attorney's Office charged Jenkins with multiple offenses, including murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Prosecutors noted that Jenkins has a significant history of gun-related offenses in Alameda County. If convicted, he faces a potential sentence ranging from 36 years and eight months to life imprisonment.
