On April 25, 2015, 21-year-old African American male Jamell Tousant was fatally shot in a drive-by attack while riding in a vehicle on the 1400 block of 90th Avenue in East Oakland, California. The incident occurred around 6:15 p.m. Jamell Tousant, a resident of Antioch, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or made arrests in connection with this homicide.
In the aftermath of his son's death, Jamell Tousant Sr., a 41-year-old African American male from Alameda, believed that members of the Berkeley-based Five Fingers Gang were responsible for the killing. He conducted his own investigation into the gang and its members.
On August 15, 2015, a shooting occurred in the 2800 block of Mabel Street near San Pablo Park in Berkeley, where four individuals were targeted. One man sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. Jamell Tousant Sr. was arrested on October 23, 2015, in connection with this incident.
In March 2018, Jamell Tousant Sr. was convicted of four counts of assault with a deadly weapon and seven other felony charges related to the Berkeley shooting. He was sentenced to 22 years in state prison. Prosecutors presented circumstantial evidence linking him to the crime, including cellphone records and photographs. The second shooter involved in the Berkeley incident has not been identified or charged.
