On May 25, 2024, at approximately 3:25 a.m., 37-year-old actor Johnny Wactor was fatally shot near the intersection of Pico Boulevard and Hope Street in downtown Los Angeles. After completing his bartending shift at the Level 8 bar/restaurant, Wactor was escorting a female co-worker to her vehicle when he noticed individuals tampering with his own car, a Toyota Prius. The assailants had elevated the vehicle with a floor jack and were attempting to steal its catalytic converter.
In an act of protection, Wactor positioned himself between his co-worker and the thieves. Without provocation, one of the suspects shot him in the chest. The perpetrators fled the scene, and Wactor was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Los Angeles Police Department launched an investigation, identifying the suspects as members of the Florencia 13 gang. On August 15, 2024, authorities arrested four individuals in connection with Wactor's death:
- **Robert Barceleau**, 18, charged with murder.
- **Sergio Estrada**, 18, charged with murder.
- **Leonel Gutierrez**, 18, charged with attempted robbery and grand theft.
- **Frank Olano**, 22, charged as an accessory after the fact to murder.
Subsequent legal proceedings revealed that Gutierrez pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and grand theft, resulting in his release on bail set at $120,000. Barceleau and Estrada faced additional charges, including murder and attempted robbery, with Barceleau also facing charges for the personal use of a firearm. If convicted, Barceleau could face life without parole, while Estrada faces life imprisonment. Olano and Gutierrez could face six and five years in prison, respectively.
Johnny Wactor was best known for his role as Brando Corbin on the soap opera "General Hospital." His untimely death has elicited profound grief within the entertainment community and among his fans. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón emphasized the senselessness of the crime and reaffirmed the commitment to seeking justice for Wactor and his loved ones.
