On June 3, 2024, in San Jacinto, California, 42-year-old Victor Hugo Leon was fatally shot while driving home from his overnight shift at a warehouse in Moreno Valley. The incident occurred around 7:00 a.m. near the intersection of West Seventh Street and South San Jacinto Avenue, where a man was reported firing randomly at passing vehicles.
The suspect, identified as 39-year-old San Jacinto resident Julio Cesar Rodarte, allegedly began his shooting spree after attempting to purchase liquor at a local market but being unable to afford it. Surveillance footage captured Rodarte firing a semiautomatic handgun at passing cars, reloading multiple times, and even discarding his weapon and clothing before being apprehended by authorities.
During the shooting, multiple vehicles were struck, and two individuals were injured. Leon, a husband and father of four, was critically wounded and later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The second victim sustained injuries but survived.
Rodarte was arrested at the scene and booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility on charges including one count of murder and ten counts of attempted murder. As of now, authorities have not disclosed a motive for the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing.
