On June 17, 2024, 59-year-old Fletcher Christoph Hicklen was fatally shot in the driveway of a residence in Los Angeles' Crenshaw District. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner determined the cause of death to be multiple gunshot wounds and classified the manner of death as homicide.
Prior to his death, Hicklen had several encounters with law enforcement.
In February 2024, he was arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, with bail set at $1.36 million. However, the district attorney declined to prosecute, and the arrest was reclassified as a detention under California Penal Code Section 849.5, which states that if no charges are filed, the arrest is deemed a detention only.
Additionally, Hicklen had previous arrests, including for threats of violence in June 2018 and assault with a firearm on a person in June 2021.
