On July 10, 2024, in Alameda, California, a tragic incident unfolded resulting in the deaths of five family members, including six-year-old William Killian. The victims were identified as William's mother, 36-year-old Brenda Natali Morales; his father, 54-year-old Shane Killian; his maternal grandparents, 70-year-old Miguel Carcamo and 56-year-old Marta Morales-Diaz; and his one-year-old brother, Wesley Killian.
Authorities responded to a call reporting a shooting at the family's residence. Upon arrival, they found Miguel Carcamo outside the home, suffering from gunshot wounds. In his final moments, Carcamo identified his son-in-law, Shane Killian, as the perpetrator. Officers detained Shane Killian at the scene without incident. A subsequent search of the residence led to the discovery of the other four victims inside.
Shane Killian was arrested and charged with multiple counts, including four counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, corporal injury to a relationship partner, elder or dependent adult abuse, infliction of injury, possession of an assault weapon, and possession of an unconventional pistol. Authorities indicated that an additional murder charge was expected to be added. He is currently being held without bail. As of the latest reports, no motive for the killings has been disclosed by the police.
The Alameda community has been deeply affected by this tragedy, particularly those connected to the local Little League where young William played baseball. Ron Matthews, President of Alameda Little League, expressed the community's grief, stating, "Our heart goes out to them in its fullest. This is really harmful to us—hurtful, I should say." In response to the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with funeral expenses and the relocation of the victims' bodies to their native El Salvador.
