On the morning of August 11, 2024, 58-year-old Saúl Guadalupe Santos was fatally shot during an attempted carjacking in Salinas, California. The incident occurred around 7:10 a.m. near the 2200 block of North Main Street, where Santos was found lying in the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite being transported to a local hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
According to Acting Salinas Police Chief John Murray, Santos was by his vehicle when he became involved in a struggle with the suspect. Santos fought back; however, the assailant drew a weapon and shot him.
On August 15, 2024, authorities arrested 23-year-old Ismael Zendejas López in connection with the homicide. He was taken into custody without incident and charged with first-degree murder.
Santos, a beloved grandfather and resident of Salinas, was known for his routine morning walks to his favorite menudo restaurant on North Main Street. His family and the local community have been deeply affected by his tragic death, mourning the loss of a hardworking and friendly individual.
