In the small town of Gassville, Arkansas, a fatal encounter on January 20, 2025, ended the life of 32-year-old Ian Nathaniel Lapio. The events of that day unfolded on Mountain Loop Road, where Lapio was found lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to Baxter Health but succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting, led by the Arkansas State Police at the request of the Gassville Police Department, soon pointed to a local couple, Danny
Paul Whitsel, 58, and his wife, Crystal Marie Whitsel, 40. The incident reportedly stemmed from an earlier confrontation between Crystal Whitsel and Lapio. According to her account to investigators, she and her dog encountered Lapio while at a neighbor's house. She claimed Lapio was 'growling' at her dog, leading to a verbal argument in which she warned him the dog might bite. Crystal Whitsel stated that she struck Lapio, and he then pushed her to the ground. However, witnesses contradicted her statement, claiming Lapio never pushed her and that she had actually tripped while trying to hit him. Following this initial dispute, Crystal Whitsel allegedly returned to her home, retrieved a firearm, and threatened to shoot Lapio if he set foot on her property.
Later, Danny Paul Whitsel confronted Lapio about the altercation with his wife. A verbal argument escalated, during which Danny Whitsel brandished a pistol and struck Lapio in the face with it. Whitsel claimed he acted in self-defense, stating that Lapio had approached him aggressively. However, witness accounts painted a different picture, stating that after striking Lapio, Whitsel shot him. According to these witnesses, after Lapio fell to the ground, Whitsel walked over to him and shot him multiple times. Investigators found six shell casings near Lapio's body.
In the wake of the investigation, Danny Paul Whitsel was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. His bond was set at $250,000. Crystal Marie Whitsel was also arrested on charges of aggravated assault, terroristic threatening, and third-degree battery. Both entered not guilty pleas to the charges against them.
