On February 4, 2006, James Walter 'Jim' Sell, a 63-year-old male, was tragically killed in the line of duty in Gassville, Arkansas. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Sell had a long and dedicated career in law enforcement. He served with the Blytheville Police Department for over 30 years, retiring as a captain. In 2003, he joined the Gassville Police Department as a part-time officer, continuing his commitment to public service.
On that fateful Saturday afternoon, Officer Sell conducted a
traffic stop in front of a motel on East Main Street. The vehicle he pulled over was connected to a violent assault that had occurred days earlier in New Bedford, Massachusetts, where the suspect had attacked patrons at a bar with a hatchet and a gun. Unbeknownst to Sell, he was approaching a dangerous fugitive who was wanted in a nationwide manhunt.
As Officer Sell approached the vehicle, the suspect immediately opened fire, striking him multiple times. The suspect then drove away, only to circle back to retrieve his driver's license from the fallen officer before fleeing the scene. A motel worker who witnessed the shooting promptly called 911, providing a detailed description of the suspect's vehicle. This initiated a high-speed pursuit involving the Baxter County Sheriff's Office and the Arkansas State Police.
The chase ended when officers successfully deployed spike strips, causing the suspect's vehicle to crash. In the final, desperate moments, the suspect shot and killed his female passenger before turning the gun on himself, ending his own life. Due to the suspect's suicide, no arrests were made in the murder of Officer James Walter Sell. His death was a profound loss to his family, the Gassville community, and the law enforcement brotherhood, and he was remembered as a kind and generous man who dedicated his life to helping others.
