On a cold January evening in Blountville, Tennessee, the life of 36-year-old Katie Elizabeth Arnold was brought to a sudden and violent end. On January 18, 2023, Arnold was in the bathroom of her Deck Lane home when she was fatally shot through the window. It was her own mother who made the horrific discovery after hearing a distressing noise. The white female's death would quickly unravel a chilling story of domestic turmoil and lead to the apprehension of her ex-boyfriend.
Investigators swiftly identified 32-year-old Donald Britt as the primary suspect in Arnold's murder. The couple had recently ended their relationship, partly due to Britt's alleged involvement in a robbery. In the days leading up to her death, Arnold had expressed fear for her safety, telling others that Britt had been stalking her. A witness later reported giving Britt a ride to an area near Arnold's residence on the night of the shooting, further solidifying the case against him.
The violence did not end with Arnold's death. After fleeing the scene, Britt proceeded to a nearby home on Stevenson Hill Road where he shot and killed 56-year-old Barry Countiss before stealing his vehicle. The following day, a police pursuit of the stolen vehicle ended in a crash in Johnson City, and Britt was taken into custody.
In August 2023, Donald Britt pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Katie Arnold and Barry Countiss. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a legal conclusion to the tragic events that unfolded on that January night.
