In the late spring of 2023, the life of Broderick Tremice Lay, a 36-year-old Black male from Chattanooga, Tennessee, was cut short. On May 26, just days before his 37th birthday, Lay died from what has been reported as gun violence. Born on May 31, 1986, to Harold Jr. and Ella Lay, he was a man known for his sense of humor and his love for football and dancing.
Those who knew him described him as a natural leader who was fiercely protective of his loved ones, a great son, brother, and father to his three children, Key'Ajia, Broderick Jr., and Kalani.
Broderick's life, however, was not without its challenges. In November 2006, at the age of 20, he was the victim of a shooting on Dorris Street in Chattanooga, an incident in which he was shot multiple times. A suspect, Cornelius 'Chucky Breed' Williams, was identified at the time, but it is unclear if he was ever apprehended. A couple of years later, in February 2008, Broderick faced federal drug charges after a police raid on his residence. During the raid, he reportedly attempted to escape by jumping through a closed window. Authorities at the time recovered cocaine, marijuana, firearms, and cash.
Despite his past encounters with the law, his death in May 2023 left many questions unanswered. Publicly available information regarding the specific circumstances of his death is scarce. His funeral services were held in early June of 2023, with a burial in Forest Hills Cemetery.
