Burnham, a 61-year-old male, had moved to Newport, Tennessee, in 2023, hoping to enjoy the serenity of the mountains after a successful career as a construction engineer. His plans for a tranquil future were violently upended on September 17, 2023, when he was fatally shot.
The investigation into Burnham's death quickly focused on his neighbor,
66-year-old David Kite Moore. On the morning of the incident, deputies from the Cocke County Sheriff's Office responded to a call in the 600 block of Baysinger Road in Parrottsville, where they discovered Burnham deceased. Authorities identified Moore as the suspect, and a warrant was issued for his arrest on a charge of first-degree murder.
Initial attempts to locate Moore were unsuccessful, leading to a search involving a S.W.A.T. team who surrounded his home. It was believed he had fled before their arrival. The following morning, law enforcement spotted Moore driving in the Newport area. A brief pursuit ensued, ending when Moore crashed his vehicle.
