Caleb Joseph Storie, a 20-year-old male, was fatally wounded on July 15, 2015, in Newport, Tennessee, following an altercation. The incident occurred in a field located at 878 Chicken Hollow Road. An investigation into the death was conducted jointly by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Cocke County Sheriff's Department.
Through their investigation, authorities identified Gary Lynn Hurley, a 52-year-old Newport resident, as the individual responsible for Storie's death.
Investigators determined that an altercation between Hurley and Storie preceded the fatal event. Following the shooting, Hurley was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
In August 2015, a Cocke County Grand Jury returned indictments against Gary Lynn Hurley. He was charged with one count of second-degree murder, one count of voluntary manslaughter, one count of reckless homicide, one count of unlawful carry or possession of a weapon, and one count of reckless endangerment. Following the indictment, Hurley was taken into custody to await arraignment. An indictment on federal weapons charges was also secured against Hurley, who was a convicted felon and found to be in possession of numerous firearms. One account, from a commenter on a petition, alleged that Hurley pled guilty.
