In the late hours of a Tuesday evening in Memphis, Tennessee, the life of 31-year-old Jermar Verselee Williams-Taper, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On December 12, 2023, at approximately 9:45 p.m., officers from the Memphis Police Department were dispatched to the 2100 block of Sycamore View in the northeastern part of the city following reports of a shooting near a gas station.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Williams-Taper inside his vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial investigation by law enforcement pointed to a homicide, with the perpetrators fleeing the scene shortly after the shooting. Surveillance footage from the vicinity captured images of a vehicle that the suspects reportedly used to escape. In an effort to generate leads and identify those responsible, the Memphis Police Department released photographs of the suspect vehicle to the public. Despite these efforts, as of late December 2023, the individuals responsible for the death of Jermar Verselee Williams-Taper had not been identified, and no arrests had been made in the case.
In the days that followed the violent incident, family and friends of Williams-Taper gathered to mourn their loss. A visitation was held on December 22, 2023, followed by a funeral service the next day at East Side Baptist Church. He was ultimately laid to rest at Memphis Memory Gardens. The investigation into his murder remains ongoing, with law enforcement continuing to seek information from the community that could lead to the apprehension and prosecution of the person or persons responsible for his death.
