In the Binghampton neighborhood of Memphis, Tennessee, a dispute over a set of car keys escalated into a tragic act of violence that claimed the life of 79-year-old Charlie Terry Sr. A respected Army veteran and retired Somerville police officer, Terry was known for his kindness and willingness to help others, a sentiment echoed by his heartbroken family.
On May 29, 2024, this generosity seemingly came to a fatal end within the walls of his own home on Los Angeles Street.
Living with Terry at the time was 26-year-old Alvin Justice, a young man whom Terry had taken in and treated like a member of his own family. An argument erupted between the two over car keys, a seemingly minor disagreement that would have devastating consequences. In the heat of the moment, Justice is alleged to have produced a firearm and shot the elderly veteran multiple times. The gunshots shattered the peace of the neighborhood and brought Memphis Police officers rushing to the scene.
Inside, they discovered Terry lying on his living room floor, critically wounded. He was rushed to Regional One Health, but the severity of his injuries proved to be too much, and he was pronounced dead. In the aftermath of the shooting, Alvin Justice fled the scene, sparking a manhunt. Authorities quickly identified him as the primary suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of second-degree murder. As of mid-June 2024, Justice remained at large, and law enforcement, along with CrimeStoppers, sought the public's assistance in locating him, offering a reward for information leading to his capture.
