On a summer evening in Dayton, Tennessee, a dispute over fireworks escalated into a tragic event that claimed the life of Heather Danielle Higgins, a 40-year-old female resident of Rhea County. On Saturday, July 6, 2024, what should have been a festive occasion turned fatal when Higgins was shot and killed. She was a caregiver and a mother, known by some in her community as a peacekeeper.
The incident began when Troy Cranston Butler, 57, allegedly became upset about fireworks being set
off by Higgins, her family, and her parents at a home on Jordan Lane. Butler reportedly drove his pickup truck to the residence, armed with a. 45-caliber handgun, to confront them. Upon his arrival, an argument immediately erupted between Butler and William Jordan, the homeowner.
In an attempt to de-escalate the heated confrontation, Heather Danielle Higgins stepped in to intervene. It was during this act of peacemaking that she was fatally shot in the chest in the front yard of the home. Despite the efforts of Rhea County deputies who responded to the scene and attempted life-saving measures, Higgins succumbed to her injuries at Rhea Medical Center.
Following the shooting, Troy Cranston Butler was arrested and charged with criminal homicide. He was taken into custody by the Rhea County authorities.
