On a summer day in Campbell County, Tennessee, the life of 62-year-old Audie Wayne Green came to a violent and unexpected end. On July 17, 2024, investigators were called to a scene along Highway 25 West where they discovered Green inside a vehicle, deceased from a gunshot wound. The male victim, a resident of the White Oak community, was found in an area roughly a mile south of the turnoff for Highway 90.
The subsequent investigation into the homicide, conducted by the Campbell County
Sheriff’s Office and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, soon focused on a man who had reportedly been with Green in the vehicle. Authorities identified 33-year-old Joshua Cox as a passenger and determined he was responsible for Green's death. In early August, while already incarcerated at the Campbell County Jail on unrelated charges, Cox was served with warrants for the killing.
Joshua Cox was later indicted on one count of second-degree murder for the death of Audie Green. During his arraignment in criminal court in October 2024, Cox entered a plea of not guilty. His legal counsel noted that a mental health evaluation was scheduled for the defendant. The case was subsequently reset to continue on February 18, 2025, as the legal proceedings against him began to unfold.
