In the late hours of a summer evening in Anderson, South Carolina, a series of events unfolded that would tragically end the life of 36-year-old Demone Devaux. On August 10, 2025, around 11:30 p.m., emergency services received a call about a man who had been shot on North Main Street. Upon their arrival, they discovered Devaux lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound. He was a Black male.
Paramedics transported Devaux to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
For a week, he fought for his life, but his injuries proved to be too severe. On August 17, 2025, Demone Devaux succumbed to his wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide by the Anderson County Coroner's Office. Known affectionately as 'Zek,' Devaux was a father to two daughters and was remembered by loved ones for his love of basketball, music, and his generous nature.
In the wake of the shooting, the Anderson Police Department launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the person responsible for Devaux's death. Their efforts led them to a suspect, Nydriques Cunningham. On Tuesday, following the shooting, police arrested Cunningham and charged him with the murder of Demone Devaux. The arrest brought a measure of resolution to a community shaken by the violent loss of one of its members.
