In the midst of a busy downtown Pittsburgh afternoon, a young man's life was abruptly cut short. Twenty-three-year-old Eugene Nance was standing near the intersection of Liberty Avenue and Seventh Street on January 19, 2023, when gunfire erupted. The incident, which unfolded around 2:15 p.m. near a bustling light rail station, sent waves of panic through the area as Nance sustained gunshot wounds to his chest and leg.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead later that day.
The immediate aftermath of the shooting saw a swift police response. Investigators quickly identified two suspects who had fled the scene. The pursuit led them across the Allegheny River to the city's North Shore, where they located and apprehended the first suspect, 18-year-old Erique Collington, in a parking garage.
