On March 25, 2023, Janell Ross, 47, was tragically killed in a shooting incident in Pittsburgh's Homewood neighborhood. The incident occurred just before midnight near Denise and Earl's Bar on Frankstown Avenue, where a ShotSpotter alert detected 15 rounds fired. Upon arrival, police found Ross and another victim, 46-year-old Damion "Day Day" Nance, both pronounced dead at the scene.
Janell Ross, affectionately known as "Nelly," was remembered by friends and family as a joyful and innocent individual. Her goddaughter, Amniasha Zanders, described her as always happy and someone who "don't do nothing to nobody." Ross was also a dedicated mother to her teenage daughter, actively participating in her life and education. Juli Kuhns, a former school counselor, noted Ross's unwavering support for her daughter, stating, "Her daughter meant the world to her."
The community responded to this tragedy with vigils and balloon releases to honor the memories of Ross and Nance. Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey, who attended one of the vigils, spoke highly of both victims, referring to Ross as a "beautiful woman" and Nance as someone who "worked with our children, with our kids, loved the community, poured love into them."
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the deaths of Janell Ross and Damion Nance. Pittsburgh police continue to investigate the case and urge anyone with information to come forward. Mayor Gainey emphasized the importance of community cooperation in addressing such violence, stating, "If somebody knows something, say something."
