In the spring of 2023, the life of 18-year-old Rolando Cepeda was cut tragically short in a burst of gunfire. On the evening of April 14th, in Hazle Township, a community just outside of Hazleton, Pennsylvania, Cepeda was shot multiple times near an auto repair shop on West 23rd Street. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries two days later.
The county coroner subsequently ruled his death a homicide, launching a significant investigation into the fatal shooting.
The investigation soon led authorities to identify three individuals believed to be involved in the incident. One of the suspects, Ismael Valdez Batista, who was 17 at the time of the shooting but charged as an adult, was identified as the driver of the getaway vehicle. In September 2024, Batista pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted homicide. His sentencing was scheduled for a later date.
A second suspect, Reymer Gonzales, also a teenager at the time of the incident, was arrested and faced charges including criminal homicide and aggravated assault. His legal team sought to have his case transferred to the juvenile court system, but he was set to stand trial as an adult. The legal proceedings for Gonzales were still pending.
The third individual implicated in Cepeda's death, Eliezer Santana, remained elusive to law enforcement. A warrant was issued for his arrest on charges of homicide and related offenses. Despite the progress in the cases against Batista and Gonzales, Santana was still considered at large, and authorities continued to seek information from the public regarding his whereabouts to bring the final suspect to justice in the shooting death of Rolando Cepeda.
