On May 16, 2023, 22-year-old Jalen "FAZO" Rieger-Williams was fatally shot inside the Quick Stop convenience store located at West 18th and Chestnut Streets in Erie, Pennsylvania. The incident occurred during the evening hours, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement.
Erie Police identified 26-year-old Jaquan Harris as the primary suspect in the shooting. Surveillance footage and other evidence led to Harris's arrest on May 17, 2023. He was subsequently charged with criminal homicide and first-degree murder, and was held in the Erie County Prison without bond.
Following the incident, the Sisters of Saint Joseph organized a "Take Back the Site" vigil at the location of the shooting. This event aimed to honor Rieger-Williams's memory and promote non-violence within the community. The vigil highlighted the ongoing concerns about safety in the area, as it was the second such event held at that location due to previous violent incidents.
Jalen Rieger-Williams was remembered as a kind and humble young man with aspirations for the future. He had obtained his GED in 2019 and was employed at Splash Lagoon in Erie for two years. An avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan, he enjoyed fishing and had a deep appreciation for country music. He is survived by his 9-month-old son, Jayce MeKhai, his girlfriend, Janelle Arnold, his mother, Ruth Williams, and several siblings and extended family members.
The tragic death of Rieger-Williams underscores the pressing issue of gun violence in Erie.
