In elementary school, he achieved the highest score on an aptitude test, which led to his placement in a specialized school for gifted children. His mother recalled that he had a natural intelligence and a love for reading, particularly enjoying books about underdogs and controversial historical figures.
He was an avid reader who was particularly drawn to the works of Maya Angelou. His intelligence was not just academic; he possessed a shrewdness that allowed him to navigate the world in a way that others relied on.
Beyond his intellectual pursuits, Sahmir had a deep compassion for animals, especially stray dogs. He would often be found in his Philadelphia neighborhood of Kensington, caring for and rescuing stray dogs, with a dream of one day owning his own kennel. His caring nature extended to his family as well; he was described as the glue that held them together. He was known by the nickname 'Smiley,' a testament to his generally positive and peaceful demeanor.
On the evening of May 21, 2023, while engaged in his passion for helping stray dogs in Kensington, Sahmir was tragically killed. An individual, reportedly motivated by a desperate need for money, saw that Sahmir was carrying cash and shot him multiple times outside of a store. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Another individual was also injured during the incident.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a possible suspect was involved in a barricade situation with police before surrendering. An arrest was made, and the individual was subsequently charged in connection with the death of Sahmir Marquan Toliaferro. A memorial service was held to honor his life and the joy he brought to those who knew him.
