On May 24, 2023, 40-year-old April Michelle Dunkle of Oil City, Pennsylvania, was fatally shot during an argument at the residence of Mark Redfield, aged 61, located at 601 Bissell Avenue. Venango County Coroner Christina Rugh confirmed that Dunkle died from a gunshot wound to the head, ruling the death a homicide.
According to the criminal complaint filed by Oil City police, the incident began with a verbal dispute between Dunkle and Redfield, who had known each other for approximately 14 years. The argument escalated, with Dunkle allegedly calling Redfield names and making phone calls that led him to fear potential harm from others. In response, Redfield retrieved a firearm from his bedroom, placed it on the kitchen table, and continued the confrontation. Dunkle reportedly challenged Redfield, stating he lacked the courage to shoot her. Redfield then raised the gun, pointed it at Dunkle, and discharged the weapon, resulting in her death.
Following the shooting, Redfield contacted emergency services but did not attempt any lifesaving measures. Upon arrival, police found Dunkle deceased at the scene and took Redfield into custody. He was subsequently charged with homicide.
In October 2024, Redfield pleaded guilty to third-degree murder for the killing of Dunkle. During court proceedings, he admitted to shooting her "out of anger" after she berated him. As part of a plea agreement, a first-degree murder charge was dropped. Venango County President Judge Matthew Kirtland accepted the plea and ordered a pre-sentencing investigation.
Dunkle is remembered for her love of scratch-off lottery tickets, playing slots and bingo, and spending time camping with her family. She cherished her children deeply. She is survived by her mother, children, siblings, and other family members. She was preceded in death by her father and grandparents.
