Dahvea Sparrow, a 15-year-old Black male known to many as Dahv, was a funny and athletic teenager with a "beautiful spirit," according to his mother. He was her only child. Dahvea was preparing to enter his sophomore year at Aliquippa High School, where he played on the football team, and also loved boxing. His mayor, who had known him since birth, said Dahvea was a great kid who lit up a room and could have been anything he wanted to be.
On the night of July 8, 2023, Dahvea’s life was
cut short in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. He had just returned to the area after spending several weeks with family in Ohio, a trip intended to remove him from a "bad circumstance." That evening, he attended a graduation house party. Around 11:20 p.m., as he was in his car near the intersection of Knoll and Main streets, a dark-colored minivan approached. According to investigators, three people exited the minivan, and one of them forcibly pulled Dahvea from the driver's side of his vehicle. An altercation began on the sidewalk, ending when Dahvea was shot twice, including once in the head from less than five feet away. He was found on the ground and pronounced dead at the scene.
Through surveillance footage and witness accounts from the community, state police quickly identified 17-year-old Lamar Seymour, a fellow Aliquippa High School student, as the shooter. An arrest warrant was issued, and Seymour was charged with criminal homicide and possession of a firearm. Authorities, along with Dahvea's family, pleaded for Seymour to surrender peacefully. On July 14, 2023, Seymour, accompanied by his attorney, turned himself in to the Beaver County sheriff’s office. He was taken into custody and charged as an adult.
The legal process moved forward over the following months. On September 5, 2023, Lamar Seymour pleaded guilty to third-degree murder. On November 6, a judge sentenced him to 19 to 40 years in prison. During the sentencing, the judge described the killing as intentional and senseless, telling Seymour, "Your actions have dictated your fate." Dahvea's mother, Nicole Sparrow, spoke after the hearing, saying a little weight had been lifted but that she would never get over the loss of her son. "Dahvea was my normal," she said. The case was closed with Seymour’s sentencing in November 2023.
