On July 9, 2023, 15-year-old Asaun Moreland was tragically shot and killed in Ambridge, Pennsylvania. Witnesses reported that Moreland was followed by two individuals dressed in dark clothing and hoodies as he walked through the town. Aware of being pursued, Moreland attempted to evade his followers by running, but was ultimately confronted on Church Street near the Ambridge library, where he was shot multiple times in what authorities described as an "execution-style" killing.
The swift response from the community played a crucial role in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. Several citizens, risking their own safety, tracked the fleeing suspects over multiple blocks, providing real-time information to law enforcement. Their efforts led police to an apartment building on Olive Lane. After a standoff, 18-year-old Nasean Malik Hunt was apprehended inside the building. He was found with clothing matching witness descriptions and was subsequently charged with criminal homicide, firearms violations, and related offenses.
Despite Hunt's arrest, the investigation continued as authorities sought a second suspect. In April 2024, charges were filed against 17-year-old Nyeheame Kirksey, identified through DNA evidence as the alleged shooter. Kirksey was believed to be hiding in Pittsburgh, and a manhunt ensued. By late April 2024, Kirksey was apprehended in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, and charged with first-degree murder. He was subsequently detained in the Beaver County Jail without bond.
On July 9, 2024, exactly one year after Moreland's death, Hunt pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and was sentenced to 15 to 40 years in prison. During court proceedings, it was revealed that Hunt's co-defendant, Kirksey, was believed to be the primary shooter, while Hunt's role was as an accomplice. Moreland's family, present during the sentencing, expressed that while Hunt's admission provided some closure, they continued to seek full justice for Asaun as they awaited Kirksey's trial scheduled for the fall.
