In the summer of 2023, Andre Sabir Lyles, a 37-year-old man, was building a life filled with promise in West Philadelphia. He and his wife had recently purchased a new home, a place buzzing with the lively energy of their growing family, which included children ranging in age from two to twenty-one, with a new baby on the way. Lyles, a man described as determined and ambitious, was not only a devoted father but also an entrepreneur with a vision to help young men, particularly those who had
been through the juvenile justice system.
The evening of August 15, 2023, began like any other. After sharing a tender moment with his wife, Lyles left to run some errands. His journey led him to a Family Dollar store located on the 5700 block of Baltimore Avenue. At approximately 8:31 p.m., the ordinary course of the evening was shattered by an act of violence. Inside the vestibule of the store, Lyles was shot in the head. Philadelphia Police officers responded to the scene and rushed him to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, but his injury was too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly. The day after Andre Lyles was killed, Philadelphia Police arrested a suspect in connection with the homicide. While the name of the individual taken into custody has not been publicly released, authorities have charged them with murder. The case is now considered solved by the police department and is pending trial.
