On February 15, 2024, at approximately 8:54 p.m., 20-year-old Philadelphia resident Kristofer Dowling was fatally shot while walking to a local pizza store in the 5800 block of Rising Sun Avenue in the city's Lawncrest neighborhood. Responding officers found Dowling with multiple gunshot wounds; he was transported to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:12 p.m.
Dowling, who had recently taken a semester off from Temple University to transfer to Montgomery County Community College with aspirations of becoming a financial advisor, was visiting friends in Lawncrest after a bout with sickle cell disease. His mother, Ivory Dowling, expressed that her son was more concerned about his health condition than the possibility of falling victim to gun violence.
The investigation into Dowling's death led to the arrest of 18-year-old Ahnile Buggs on March 22, 2024. Buggs was charged with murder and related offenses in connection with the shooting. Prior to his arrest for Dowling's murder, Buggs had been apprehended for his involvement in a mass shooting at a SEPTA bus stop on March 6, 2024, which injured eight Northeast High School students.
Authorities have indicated that Buggs' arrest has brought some solace to Dowling's family, though they continue to grapple with the loss. The case against Buggs is pending trial, and the Philadelphia Police Department has urged anyone with additional information to come forward to aid in the pursuit of justice.
