In the late hours of a February evening, a discovery was made in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park that brought a tragic end to the life of 38-year-old Krystina Chambers. A Black female from the city, Krystina was found on February 29, 2024, near Mount Pleasant Drive, the victim of a fatal shooting. Alongside her was the body of 49-year-old Thurston Cooper; both had been shot in what police described as an 'execution-style' killing. Krystina had sustained gunshot wounds to her head and chest.
Medics arrived at the scene but could only pronounce both victims dead.
The investigation into the double homicide revealed that the events leading to the tragic outcome began earlier that night at a North Philadelphia bar called Tellup's Tavern. An argument occurred between Chambers, Cooper, and two other men, identified as 52-year-old Lamar Young and 56-year-old Dale Johnson. Despite the initial dispute, tensions seemed to ease, and surveillance footage showed all four individuals leaving the bar together in a Kia Sportage driven by Johnson. Authorities believe Chambers and Cooper willingly entered the vehicle, having been offered a ride.
Instead of being taken to their intended destination, they were driven to the secluded area of Fairmount Park. The investigation, aided by surveillance footage, tracked the vehicle to the park around 10 p.m. Just before 11 p.m., a passerby discovered the bodies and alerted the police.
In the following weeks, the Philadelphia Police Department's Homicide Unit actively pursued the case. Following the release of images from the tavern, Lamar Young surrendered to authorities. Both he and Dale Johnson were subsequently arrested and charged with murder, conspiracy, and other related offenses in connection with the deaths of Krystina Chambers and Thurston Cooper. The case is now pending trial.
