On March 5, 2024, Richard Butler, an 88-year-old Air Force veteran and retired SEPTA bus driver, was fatally shot in West Philadelphia. The incident occurred around 1:35 p.m. on the 100 block of North Dewey Street, where Butler was seated in his white Hyundai Santa Fe. An unidentified assailant approached the vehicle and fired multiple shots, striking Butler twice in the chest.
