In a brazen daytime shooting in West Philadelphia, 88-year-old Richard Butler, a male Air Force veteran and retired SEPTA bus driver, was shot and killed while sitting in his car on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. The incident occurred around 1:35 p.m. in the 100 block of North Dewey Street. Butler, a beloved grandfather and a well-known figure in his community, had just dropped off a friend when the fatal attack took place.
Surveillance footage released by the Philadelphia police shows a
suspect exiting a silver Nissan Altima with tinted windows shortly before the shooting. The unidentified individual, wearing a light-colored hooded sweatshirt and dark shorts over black tights, approached Butler's white Hyundai and fired multiple shots. Butler was struck twice in the chest. Despite his injuries, he attempted to drive away, but his vehicle came to rest on a sidewalk. First responders had to use a crowbar to access the vehicle and rush him to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:56 p.m.
As of now, no arrests have been made in the case, and the motive for the shooting remains unknown. The Philadelphia Police Department is actively investigating the homicide and has offered a $20,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for Richard Butler's death. His family and community are left mourning the sudden and violent loss of a man described as an 'outstanding guy' and a 'fixture in the community.'
