On April 29, 2024, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Pittsburgh police responded to reports of a shooting on Heckelman Street in the Troy Hill neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers discovered 18-year-old David Rivera lying on the sidewalk in front of a residence, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite immediate medical attention from officers and medics, Rivera was pronounced dead at the scene shortly thereafter.
David Rivera had been previously involved in a notable incident earlier that year. On February 23, 2024, he was identified as one of several individuals who attacked a homeless man, Dajuan Davis, in Pittsburgh's Market Square. The assault, which occurred around 4 p.m., was captured on video and showed Rivera and others repeatedly punching and kicking Davis, rendering him unconscious. Rivera was subsequently charged with aggravated assault and had a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 6, 2024.
As of December 24, 2024, the investigation into Rivera's death remains active. No arrests have been made, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects. Detectives from the Violent Crime Unit continue to seek information and encourage anyone with knowledge about the incident to come forward.
