On the night of Sunday, May 26th, Harris was with a crowd of people on Rorer Street near Bingham when multiple shooters opened fire. Police believe there was an exchange of gunfire between two groups.
When officers arrived at the scene shortly before 10:30 p.m., they found Harris suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the head. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A devoted family man with a young daughter, Harris was a SEPTA bus operator and a member of the SMART-TD Local 1594 union. Friends described him as a man who inspired others to better themselves and who was dedicated to fitness. Those close to Harris believe he was not the intended target of the shooting, but rather an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire. The tragic incident was part of a violent night in Philadelphia, with two other fatal shootings occurring within a 45-minute span.
The investigation into the shooting that killed Devan Harris is ongoing. At the scene, police recovered more than 30 shell casings from both handguns and rifles, indicating the intensity of the violence. As of early June 2024, no arrests had been made in connection with the murder. Authorities have not publicly identified any suspects. The Philadelphia Police Department has offered a $20,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case.
