In the quiet community of Chackbay in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, a family argument on December 30, 2014, escalated into a tragedy that would leave one brother dead and the other facing a murder charge. Rashaud Benoit Gasery, a 22-year-old Black male, was shot and killed, leading to the arrest of his older brother.
That evening, deputies from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office were called to Rashaud's home around 6:45 p.m., where they found he had been struck by a single bullet that
entered his arm and chest. He was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Initially, his 30-year-old brother, Johuan Gasery of Vacherie, who was present at the scene, claimed the shooting was an accident. He told investigators that he and Rashaud had been arguing outside the residence when Rashaud punched him. Johuan stated that he then pulled out a handgun and fired a single shot into the ground. He further alleged that the gun accidentally discharged again as he attempted to throw it to the ground.
However, detectives quickly found Johuan's account to be inconsistent with the evidence they recovered from the scene and the nature of Rashaud's wounds. The investigation suggested that the shots were fired at two separate locations, leading authorities to believe that Rashaud was trying to flee from his brother during the altercation. Based on the conflicting statements and the evidence, Johuan Gasery was arrested and booked into the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux on a charge of second-degree murder. His bond was set at $1 million.
