In the late evening of June 22, 2024, Philadelphia Police Officer Jaime Junior Roman, a 31-year-old male, was on patrol in the Kensington neighborhood with his partner. They initiated a traffic stop on F Street, discovering that the vehicle was unregistered and the driver lacked a license. As they waited for a tow truck, the driver was allowed to have friends help him remove personal items from the car.
It was during this process that the officers spotted a gun holster, which immediately heightened the tension of the routine stop.
When questioned about the holster, the driver made a sudden decision to flee. He ran into the street, and in a shocking turn of events, he pivoted and fired three shots back at the officers. One of these bullets tragically struck Officer Roman in the neck. His partner returned fire, but the suspect was not hit. He was initially charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer, aggravated assault, evading arrest, and tampering with evidence, with his bail set at $12.5 million. After bravely fighting for 80 days, Officer Jaime Roman succumbed to his injuries on September 10, 2024, surrounded by his family. His death was a profound loss for his wife, his two young children, and the entire Philadelphia Police Department, where he had served for nearly seven years. Following his passing, the charges against Vazquez were upgraded to murder, and the District Attorney's office pledged to vigorously prosecute the case to seek justice for the fallen hero.
