In the early morning hours of November 8, 2024, a dispute between friends over a video game in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, escalated into a fatal encounter. Daniel Gray, a 22-year-old man, was shot and killed by his friend, 21-year-old Holden Hoffsis. The incident occurred at a residence on Westhorpe Lane, where the two had been playing the video game Fortnite.
Throughout the night, as they played, drank, and used drugs, Hoffsis had been handling a silver revolver, repeatedly loading and
unloading it. An argument erupted after they lost a round of the game. Hoffsis confronted Gray, pointed the gun at him, said 'bang,' and pulled the trigger, firing a single, fatal shot into his friend's chest. Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 3:27 a.m., but Daniel Gray succumbed to his injuries.
When Schuylkill Township police arrived, they found Gray deceased and began an investigation. Investigators discovered marijuana, drug packaging materials, and suspected cocaine in Hoffsis's room and possession. Holden Hoffsis was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, third-degree murder, and other related offenses. He was held at the Chester County Prison without bail.
Ultimately, Holden Hoffsis, then 22, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder. He admitted to the court that he had accidentally killed his longtime friend, expressing remorse for his actions. A Chester County judge sentenced Hoffsis to 12.5 to 25 years in state prison. Daniel Gray, a graduate of Phoenixville High School where he played football and wrestled, was remembered by his family as an ambitious and joyful individual with an entrepreneurial spirit, having recently started his own trucking company.
