In the quiet borough of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, the afternoon of December 29, 2020, was shattered by a grim discovery that would unravel a tale of betrayal and violence. On that day, friends of 73-year-old Ira Lee Solomon arrived at his home on the 400 block of Dayton Street to find a scene of horror. The back door was unlocked, an unsettling detail that led them to the kitchen where they found Solomon lying in a pool of blood.
He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. Near his body, investigators recovered two 9mm shell casings and a miniature baseball bat, clues to the violent struggle that had transpired.
The investigation into the death of the long-time Phoenixville Scrap Yard employee began with an appeal to the public for information, particularly from residents with exterior video security cameras. Friends reported having spoken to Solomon as late as 11:30 a.m. on the day of his death, narrowing the timeframe for the tragic event. A witness recalled hearing gunshots between 11:50 a.m. and noon. Another crucial piece of information came from a witness who reported seeing an unfamiliar silver or gray car in the area before the shooting. This vehicle, a silver Nissan Altima, would become a key element in piecing together the events that led to Solomon's death. The investigation, which involved hundreds of hours of work by borough police, county detectives, and state troopers, meticulously followed every lead.
Nearly two years after the incident, a major breakthrough was announced in August 2022. Chester County officials charged three family members—two brothers and their cousin—with the murder of Ira Solomon. The suspects were identified as Raheem Pinder, 46, of Pottstown; Dayon Pinder, 44, of West Chester; and Nathaniel Pinder, 49, of Philadelphia. Authorities alleged that the trio had staged a robbery at Solomon's home, during which Raheem Pinder deliberately killed him. The investigation revealed that an acquaintance had previously introduced Dayon and Nathaniel Pinder to the victim. This same acquaintance told police that on the day of the murder, the Pinders had accused him of owing them money, and Raheem Pinder had brandished a semiautomatic handgun. Surveillance footage from the area and a hotel in Uwchlan Township where one of the defendants was staying, along with DNA evidence, linked the three men to the crime scene. They were charged with murder, robbery, burglary, conspiracy, and related offenses. A trial for the three men was scheduled to begin in August 2023.
