On January 24, 2023, at approximately 2:46 p.m., deputies from the Robeson County Sheriff's Office responded to a shooting incident on Samuel Williams Drive in Red Springs, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered three individuals deceased from multiple gunshot wounds: 34-year-old Sierra Nicole Wherry, her brother 51-year-old Donald Kendrick Williams, and 45-year-old family friend James Elijah Beauregard.
Additionally, 71-year-old Equilla Williams-Biggs, mother of Wherry and Williams, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a medical facility for treatment.
The investigation led to the arrest of 46-year-old Corey Grant Leak, a nephew of Williams-Biggs and cousin to Wherry and Williams. Authorities determined that an argument over money, reportedly related to drugs, escalated into the fatal shootings. Leak, who had been residing with his aunt, was apprehended near Maxton, North Carolina, shortly after the incident. He faces charges including three counts of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Notably, Leak had previously served nearly 27 years in prison for a 1993 murder and was on parole at the time of the shootings.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Red Springs community held vigils and memorials to honor the victims. Family members and residents expressed profound grief and emphasized the close-knit nature of the community.
