On October 28, 2023, at approximately 12:42 a.m., deputies from the Hoke County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported shooting near the 3000 block of South Old Wire Road in Red Springs, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 24-year-old Monica Lisettaé Maynor, who had sustained a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Maynor, a resident of Shannon, North Carolina, was attending a Halloween party at a community center on South Old Wire Road.
According to her family, she had decided to attend the event with her twin brother, Mychal, on a whim. Her mother, Lisa Maynor, recalled how beautiful Monica looked that evening, noting she had been growing out her natural hair.
Following an investigation, detectives identified 21-year-old Jamison Dwayne Locklear as a suspect in the shooting. Locklear was arrested on October 30, 2023, and charged with first-degree murder. He was taken into custody without incident and held without bond at the Hoke County Detention Center.
During Locklear's initial court appearance, tensions escalated between the families of the victim and the suspect, leading to a physical altercation. The confrontation resulted in several individuals being charged with contempt of court, including Monica's mother, Lisa. The judge denied bond to Locklear, who is accused of fatally shooting Maynor after an alleged argument with her brother at the party.
Monica's family continues to grieve her loss, expressing that she was a hardworking young woman who rarely attended parties. They are seeking further information, believing that others may have been involved in the incident.
