On January 30, 2023, at approximately 10:07 p.m., officers from the Spring Lake Police Department responded to a reported home invasion in the 100 block of South Fourth Street in Spring Lake, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 26-year-old resident Charles Michael Conley had been fatally shot. Emergency medical personnel pronounced Conley dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigations indicated that one or more suspects forcibly entered Conley's home and, during the intrusion, shot him. The assailants fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. Conley's mother described him as a "loving kindhearted man who always put people before himself" and mentioned his willingness to help anyone in need. She initiated a fundraising campaign to cover his funeral expenses.
As of December 2024, no arrests have been made in connection with Conley's death. The Spring Lake Police Department continues to investigate the case and has appealed to the public for assistance.
