On March 10, 2023, 27-year-old Talia Petoia of Tryon, North Carolina, was fatally shot at a residence in Mill Spring. Her boyfriend, 21-year-old Tyler Grayson Laughter, claimed the incident occurred accidentally while he was cleaning a loaded handgun, which discharged and struck Petoia in the chest. She was transported to Spartanburg Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
