On March 10, 2023, 27-year-old Talia Petoia of Tryon, North Carolina, was fatally shot at a residence in Mill Spring. Her boyfriend, 21-year-old Tyler Grayson Laughter, claimed the incident occurred accidentally while he was cleaning a loaded handgun, which discharged and struck Petoia in the chest. She was transported to Spartanburg Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Following the incident, the Polk County Sheriff's Office conducted an investigation. On March 17, 2023, Laughter was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, accused of negligently discharging the firearm that caused Petoia's death. He was released on bond shortly thereafter.
Petoia's family expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation, alleging that it was prematurely concluded as accidental before all evidence, including the autopsy, was thoroughly reviewed. They also highlighted a history of domestic violence in the couple's relationship, which they felt was not adequately considered. In response, the family initiated a GoFundMe campaign to fund an independent investigation into Talia's death.
On June 12, 2023, a Polk County grand jury indicted Laughter on the involuntary manslaughter charge. Subsequently, on April 15, 2024, Laughter pleaded guilty to the charge in Polk County Superior Court. He was sentenced to a term of 15 to 27 months in the North Carolina Department of Corrections, with eligibility for release after 15 months based on good behavior. The court also mandated that Laughter attend domestic violence and anger management classes during his incarceration.
Throughout the legal proceedings, Petoia's family and friends remained vocal, advocating for a more comprehensive investigation and seeking justice for Talia. They organized fundraisers and memorials to honor her memory and to raise awareness about domestic violence. Despite their efforts, the case concluded with Laughter's sentencing in April 2024.
