On April 17, 2023, 18-year-old Victoria Faith Jefferson was fatally shot in the 5500 block of Gilcrest Sands Drive in Hope Mills, North Carolina. The incident occurred just before midnight, also resulting in injuries to two other individuals, including Jefferson's best friend, Ashley Johnson. Neighbors described the location as a hotspot for trouble.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible. On May 16, 2023, authorities arrested 21-year-old Jocephus Jones III of Fayetteville, charging him with first-degree murder in connection with Jefferson's death. Jones was taken into custody by the Fayetteville Police Department and held without bond at the Cumberland County Detention Center.
Subsequently, on July 7, 2023, a second suspect, 22-year-old Jayquan Deshawn Blandshaw of Hope Mills, was arrested. Blandshaw faced charges including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He was also held without bond at the Cumberland County Detention Center.
The arrests provided some solace to Jefferson's grieving family. Her mother, Arlene Hunt, expressed profound sorrow over the loss of her daughter, recalling her laughter, smile, and love for dancing. Victoria left behind a one-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son, who are now being raised by their grandparents. Her father, Apostle Solomon Hunt, who delivered her eulogy, described it as the most challenging task in his 32 years of preaching.
Authorities continue to seek information regarding the circumstances surrounding Jefferson's death. They urge anyone with relevant details to contact the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office or Crime Stoppers to assist in the ongoing investigation.
