On March 11, 2023, at approximately 12:29 a.m., Ahoskie Police responded to a report of an unresponsive individual lying near the edge of Hayes Street, close to Railroad Street. Upon arrival, officers and Hertford County EMS discovered 44-year-old William Nathaniel Raynor deceased at the scene.
An autopsy later confirmed that Raynor had died from a gunshot wound.
The Ahoskie Police Department, in collaboration with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death. At the time, authorities had limited information and appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone who had seen Raynor on March 10 or during the late hours leading up to his death, or who had observed or heard anything unusual in the vicinity, to come forward.
As of the latest available information, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with Raynor's death. The investigation remains active, with law enforcement continuing to seek leads to determine the events that led to this fatal shooting.
