On April 14, 2023, a tragic incident unfolded in Ahoskie, North Carolina, resulting in the deaths of 17-year-old Jaylen Lamar Carey and 46-year-old Derrick Lamont Monger. The confrontation occurred at Carey's residence on Jernigan Airport Road, where both individuals exchanged gunfire, leading to fatal injuries for both. The altercation was reportedly linked to a prior dispute involving Monger's family member and Carey.
Shortly after the initial shooting, a retaliatory attack targeted the same residence. Multiple shots were fired into the home, injuring 25-year-old Joshua Devonte Tann, Carey's relative, who was grazed by bullet fragments. Tann received medical treatment at ECU Health Roanoke-Chowan Hospital and was later released.
Law enforcement swiftly identified and apprehended several suspects connected to the retaliatory shooting. Among those arrested were 21-year-old Cameron Jaiy’er Lassiter and 20-year-old Justin Rashad Powell, each charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of discharging a weapon into occupied property. Both were held under $1 million secured bonds. Additionally, 24-year-old Brandin Deandre Hawkins faced charges of accessory after the fact, with a secured bond set at $5,000.
Further investigation led to the arrest of 47-year-old Andreas Monger, the wife of Derrick Monger. She was charged with two counts each of attempted first-degree murder and discharging a weapon into occupied property, with a secured bond of $300,000. Authorities also apprehended 29-year-old Rashad Quadre Harmon, charging him with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of discharging a weapon into occupied property, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Harmon was held under a $1,075,000 secured bond.
