On April 22, 2023, 31-year-old Jemel Donavan Brooks of Havelock, North Carolina, was fatally shot during a domestic dispute at 117 Kenneth Boulevard. The Havelock Police Department responded to a call at approximately 9:25 p.m. and found Brooks deceased upon arrival.
Investigations revealed that prior to the shooting, Brooks and his girlfriend, Nadia Comer, were engaged in a verbal and physical altercation.
During this dispute, Nadia's brother, Jaydan Comer, who also resided at the home, approached the front porch and observed Brooks pointing an AR-style rifle at his sister. In response, Jaydan, armed with a pistol, fired multiple shots through the screen door, striking Brooks several times.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation assisted the Havelock Police Department in processing the crime scene. Authorities have stated that this was an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the public. As of the latest available information, the investigation remains active, and no arrests have been reported in connection with the case.
