On May 18, 2023, at approximately 4:32 p.m., Durham Police Department officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 300 block of Avon Lake Drive, located within the Avon Crossings apartment complex. Upon arrival, they discovered two male victims suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the victims, identified as 21-year-old Durham resident Desean Monroe, was pronounced dead at the scene.
