On the evening of January 4, 2026, a burst of gunfire on Hillsborough Road in Durham, North Carolina, claimed the life of 30-year-old Irease Jeffrey, a Black male known in his community as a devoted father and a rising rapper. Jeffrey was driving his 2024 Chevy Malibu westbound at approximately 9:00 p.m. when another vehicle pulled alongside. An occupant of the second vehicle opened fire, striking Jeffrey in the neck.
The assault caused Jeffrey to lose control of his car, which then crashed in a nearby parking lot.
A female passenger in Jeffrey's vehicle was also struck by the gunfire, sustaining a serious head injury that left her in critical but stable condition. Emergency services transported both victims to a local hospital, where Irease Jeffrey was pronounced deceased. The Durham Police Department launched an investigation into the fatal shooting, canvassing the area for evidence and appealing to the public for any information that might lead to the perpetrators.
