On July 29, 2023, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, 22-year-old Lorenzo Darnell McLaughlin Jr. was fatally shot near the intersection of Stanberry Street and Primrose Drive, close to E.E. Smith High School. Officers responding to reports of gunfire around 11:45 a.m. found McLaughlin suffering from a gunshot wound; he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation revealed that McLaughlin had been communicating on social media with two brothers, 20-year-old Devonte Tyrell McClain and 18-year-old Adriane McClain, both of Fayetteville. The McClain brothers allegedly used information from these online interactions to locate McLaughlin. They drove to his location and, upon finding him walking in the neighborhood, shot him.
Authorities arrested Devonte and Adriane McClain, charging both with first-degree murder and felony conspiracy. They were booked into the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond. The case underscores the potential dangers associated with sharing personal information online, as the suspects reportedly tracked McLaughlin's location through his social media activity.
McLaughlin, known as "Zo" to his friends, was remembered by his family as a lively and fun-loving individual. A 2019 graduate of E.E. Smith High School, he had aspirations of becoming a mechanic and starting his own family. His untimely death has left his family and the local community in mourning.
