On the evening of August 5, 2023, 48-year-old Jennifer Renea Vann and her husband, Brian Carter Vann, also 48, were found deceased in their residence on Sambo Jackson Road in Wade, North Carolina. Cumberland County Sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a possible overdose at approximately 9:32 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered both individuals had sustained fatal gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial report of an overdose quickly escalated into a double homicide investigation. Authorities have not publicly disclosed any information regarding potential suspects or motives behind the killings. In April 2024, the Sheriff's Office announced they were seeking 49-year-old Kenneth Eldridge Coats of Godwin for questioning in connection with the case. However, no arrests have been made, and Coats' current status remains undisclosed.
Jennifer Vann was remembered as a devoted wife and mother. She and Brian were parents to their daughter, Catherine. The couple's sudden and violent deaths have left the community in shock and mourning. A joint funeral service was held, and both were laid to rest in the Old Bluff Church Cemetery in Wade.
As the one-year anniversary of the incident approached in August 2024, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office renewed their plea for information, urging anyone with knowledge about the case to come forward. Despite ongoing investigations, the case remains unsolved, leaving family members and the community seeking justice and closure.
