Kimberly Dianne Richardson, a 25-year-old African American woman, was tragically killed on April 18, 2015, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Richardson, who was six months pregnant at the time, was shot just after 9:30 p.m. in the 3600 block of Sumner Boulevard, near Triangle Town Center. In a distressing 911 call, Richardson could be heard pleading for help, stating that she had been shot and was losing consciousness.
Despite being rushed to WakeMed, she succumbed to her injuries early the next morning. However, doctors were able to save her baby, a girl, who was later named Lacy.
The investigation quickly led to the arrest of Daniel Joseph Steele, a 25-year-old Caucasian man who had been dating Richardson. Steele was apprehended at his home on Snowcrest Drive shortly after the shooting. He was charged with first-degree murder and the attempted murder of the unborn child. According to search warrants, Steele admitted to shooting Richardson after the couple had met to discuss problems in their relationship. He also provided the location of the weapon and ammunition used in the incident, which matched evidence found at the crime scene.
In September 2016, Steele pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and attempted murder of an unborn child. He was sentenced to 240 to 300 months for the murder conviction and an additional 157 to 201 months for the attempted murder charge. The infant, Lacy, survived and is being raised by Richardson's parents, requiring around-the-clock care.
The case drew significant attention due to the tragic circumstances and the survival of the baby. Richardson was remembered as a hardworking individual who held two jobs and was excited about becoming a mother. Her death left a profound impact on her community, with many expressing their sorrow and disbelief over the senseless act of violence.
